Honu: Hawaiian Sea Turtle There’s a certain kind of calm that settles over you when you spot a Hawaiian sea turtle, honu, gliding through the water like it has all the time in the world. On Oahu, these ancient creatures feel like part of the island’s heartbeat. You can be standing on the sand, listening to the waves fold over themselves, and suddenly a smooth, dark shell rises through the surface. It’s a moment that pulls you out of your thoughts and into the present. One of those moments found me while paddleboarding at Ala Moana Beach. The water was glassy and quiet, the kind of morning where the ocean feels half-asleep. Out of nowhere, a honu surfaced right beside my board. It lingered there with its head above the water, eyes soft and unbothered for what felt like a full thirty seconds.
